Speculative Hybrid Avatars is a personal visual exploration of the immaterial, metaphysical analogs in the future of the metaverse. The final visualization of the avatars is inspired by AI-generated hybrid life forms with the input of a diverse data collection across species of life on earth. This project aims to break through the conventional ideation of “avatars” (which are usually human-formed) to open up more possibilities for expressing one’s fluid digital identity in a world of endless creativity and inclusivity.
Why be bonded by the human form in a reality of endless possibilities?
It is an experimentation of using machines to access the territory out of human imagination, which corresponds to the intangible future vision of the metaverse. This thesis discusses and reflects on the complex and nuanced tension as well as possibilities between human existence and our relation with the unknown future with the aid of the current machine and technology.
It is a speculative proposal for “redesigning” the living systems of our metaverse with a reinforcement of our intimate connection with the natural world. By challenging the traditional binary thinking through the use of non-human avatars, it hopes to offer a more sustainable and holistic approach to living both in the metaverse and in real life.
With explorations on multiple open source AI platforms, I had a series of morphed hybrid forms from input of human and natural forms, such as micro species, marine species, etc.
Then, with these collections of training results, I imported them into Google Colab ML models for further generations and used my own instructions on the desired visual styles. The final touch was using Touch Designer for advanced visual effects.
